Dense urban routes โ€” expect protected and unprotected left turns, school zones, and heavy pedestrian scanning.

San Francisco Bay Area

Hill starts, one-way streets, and bike-lane checks feature on most Bay Area routes.

How the California Driving Test Is Scored

California uses the Driving Performance Evaluation (DPE) score sheet. The examiner first runs a pre-drive safety checklist (horn, lights, hand signals, parking brake), then marks errors as you drive a set route from the DMV office.

To pass you need no critical driving errors, no more than 3 errors on the pre-drive checklist, and no more than 15 minor marked errors across the scoring maneuvers. The fail rate has climbed every year since 2021 โ€” roughly 1 in 3 applicants now fails, which is exactly why practicing the real route pays off.

What the California Road Test Covers

  • Pulling to the curb and backing in a straight line (California does not test parallel parking)
  • Left and right turns at controlled and uncontrolled intersections
  • Lane changes with mirror and over-the-shoulder checks
  • Backing in a straight line
  • Speed control in school, residential, and business zones
  • Full stops at stop signs and correct traffic-light procedure

Automatic Fails on the California Test

  • Rolling through a stop sign, or stopping past the limit line
  • Incomplete traffic checks โ€” missed blind-spot (head) checks are the #1 critical error
  • Failure to yield to a pedestrian or cyclist
  • Unsafe lane change or turning from the wrong lane
  • Driving too fast for conditions โ€” or more than 10 mph under the limit without reason
  • Any maneuver that forces the examiner to intervene (verbal or physical)
  • Disobeying a traffic sign, signal, or safety personnel
  • Contact with another vehicle, object, or curb (beyond light touch while parking)

How to Schedule Your Road Test in California

  1. Hold your instruction permit for at least 6 months (under 18) and complete your supervised hours.
  2. Book the behind-the-wheel test online at dmv.ca.gov or call 1-800-777-0133 โ€” walk-in drive tests are not accepted.
  3. The $45 application fee covers up to three driving test attempts; a no-show forfeits one.
  4. Bring your permit, proof of insurance and registration for the test vehicle, and a licensed accompanying driver.
  5. If you fail: wait 14 days, pay the $9 retest fee, and book again. After three fails you must restart the application.

Test Vehicle Requirements in California

  • Current registration and valid proof of insurance
  • Working driver-side window, windshield with no cracks in the wiper path, and two rear-view mirrors
  • Functioning horn, brake lights, turn signals, and parking brake
  • Passenger-side seat belt and a door that opens from inside and outside
  • You must be able to demonstrate hand signals, defroster, emergency flashers, headlights, and wipers

๐Ÿ’ก Local Tips for California

  • Stop behind the limit line โ€” rolling over it at a right-on-red is an automatic fail at many offices.
  • Check the bike lane and shoulder over your right shoulder before every right turn.

๐Ÿ—‚๏ธ What to Bring on Test Day

  • Your learner permit and a second form of ID if your state requires it
  • Registration and proof of insurance for the test vehicle
  • A safe, road-legal vehicle โ€” working lights, signals, horn, and brake lights are checked first
  • Glasses or contacts if your permit has a corrective-lenses restriction
  • Arrive at least 15 minutes early to check in

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the routes real?

Yes โ€” collected from examiner feedback, GPS-recorded data from actual tests, and video analysis of completed routes. They are regularly reviewed and updated.

How do I practice?

Browse the California listings above. Each location shows the routes available there. Use the map link to navigate to the test center and drive the route yourself before test day.

Why practice the exact routes?

Familiarity with the actual test roads reduces anxiety, builds the specific skills your examiner scores, and dramatically improves first-time pass rates.

Is parallel parking on the California test?

No. California tests pulling to the curb and backing up in a straight line for about three car lengths instead. You will not be asked to parallel park between cars.

How many mistakes are allowed?

Up to 15 minor errors โ€” but zero critical errors. A single critical error (rolling stop, missed blind-spot check, examiner intervention) fails the test regardless of your score.

What happens if I fail?

You wait 14 days, pay a $9 retest fee, and rebook. Your $45 application covers three attempts; after a third fail you must reapply and pay again.

Can I take the test in a rental car?

Usually not. The DMV requires proof of insurance covering you as the driver, and most rental agreements exclude road tests. Use your own, a family, or a driving-school car.
